Chico (Butte County)
The name for the Parlor was suggested by charter Member Helen Sommer Gage in honor of Mrs. Bidwell’s love of the city and her many contributions to its people. Mrs. Bidwell was the wife of General John Bidwell, founder of Chico.
The Parlor seal shows the famous Chico Hooker Oak plus the California poppies. The tree stood in part of Bidwell Park and was one the world’s largest trees. It was named in honor of Sir Joseph Hooker, famous English botanist. Sir Joseph had visited the Bidwells in Chico. The oak tree was believed to have stood for 1,000 years when it fell on May 1, 1977, during a fierce wind storm. The poppies were added because some of them grew in the fields surrounding the tree.
