The founding fathers of California combined the Spanish romance of Califia and the classical figure of Athens to create a symbol for the State of California – Minerva, the Golden Amazon. Califia was a queen who ruled over the island of California. She was statuesque in proportion more beautiful than all the rest, in the flower of her womanhood, eager to perform great deeds, valiant and spirited, and ambitious to excel all those who ruled before her. It seemed fitting to those who were forming a new Parlor to have it named after such a queen as Califia.
The center of the seal depicts Califia with the cornucopia at her feet representing the riches of California.
