Alameda

Ah-lah-may-dah is the old time Spanish pronunciation, but many now say Al-a-mee-dah. An alameda is an avenue or boulevard shaded by trees. Derived from Alamo (Al-lah-moh) – popular or cottonwood. Alameda was first called Encinal (Ayn-see-nahl) – oak grove. The seal depicts a young woman standing on the shore of San Francisco Bay. The motto “Pro Speritas Terra Mare Que” means “the spirit of the land and water.”
